Microsoft has finally decided to publicly support network security in Windows XP, a new area covered in the third edition of bestseller, Hacking Exposed. Other new coverage includes attacks on 802.11 wireless networks. But despite details of recent high-profile worms such as Code Red, most of the material is carried over pretty well unchanged from earlier editions. The guts of Hacking Exposed remain devoted to explaining operating systems, switch and network vulnerabilities--used by the bad guys to get in--and how to remove them. The solutions--apart from the material on social engineering--can require an understanding of network and operating system protocols, user privileges, validation, encryption, file systems and other arcana--though the explanations supplied are detailed enough for the interested user to understand and apply firewalls, security patches, effective authentication and other effective security measures. The book is supported by a Web site with useful network analysis and other tools you can use to investigate and harden your own systems. Hacking Exposed remains one of the most accessible books available on network security and the latest version is excellent. However, while new vulnerabilities continue to be found the basics remain the same. If Hacking Exposed were software the third edition would be a free upgrade for registered users. Even so, it should be compulsory reading for sysadmins everywhere. --Steve Patient

WAP is the standard that is defining a new generation of mobile Internet access devices. It's not pretty, it's not fast, but it sort of works and that's good enough for every telephone company in the world to announce imminent WAP services and hope their stock takes off. This book is a guide for competent Java programmers who need to know how Java works under Symbian, and want to learn by working through some illustrative examples (beginning with Hello World and working up in complexity from there). The authors--who work for Symbian--do a good job of revealing their environment's capabilities, and leave their readers feeling prepared to dive in and do less academic development work. Code samples and class diagrams help clarify systems' workings, and explanatory prose is generally lucid. Helpfully, the authors go beyond mere explanation of APIs and show how to build full applications, including a multi-user card game and a chat-and-whiteboard tool. As with any emerging technology, though, readers may wonder how the examples will pan out outside the emulator, in a production environment. Only time and experience will tell. 802.11 Wireless Networks: The Definitive Guide aims to codify the body of knowledge needed to design and maintain wireless local area networks (LANs). Among network designers and administrators, wired Ethernet is a known quantity. Plenty is known about how to build good twisted-pair network infrastructures, how to keep them secure, and how to monitor their excess capacity. Not so for the wireless Ethernet networks (built around the IEEE 802.11x standards)--these hold much more mystery for even experienced network designers. The authors succeed admirably in this, covering what installation and administration teams need to know and digging into information of use to driver writers and others working at lower levels. The only significant detail that's been excluded has to do with security--a notorious weak point of 802.11x LANs. The authors cover the feeble-but-widely-used Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) authentication protocol in detail, and devote another whole chapter to 802.1x, which is an emerging authentication scheme based on Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP). The author has considerable skill in communicating information graphically, and does a great job of using graphs to show how communications frequencies shift over time and how conversations among access points and network nodes progress over time. The framing specification is covered well, as are authentication protocols and (in detail) the physical phenomena that affect IEEE 802.11x radio transmissions. Das Folgekapitel widmet sich dann der Koexistenz etwa mit Windows 2000 und der Migration. Bevor dann die Praxis zu Wort kommt, wirft Joos noch einen Blick auf die Lizensierung der Groupware. Der praktische Einsatz beginnt in Kapitel vier: Installation einer Testumgebung und Kapitel fünf: Einstieg in Exchange Server 2003 (System Manager, Benutzerverwaltung, System-Verzeichnis und -Dienste). Es folgen die einzelnen Schritte der Einrichtung: Installation, Clustering, Migration und Koexistenz sowie die Planung, das Nachrichten-Routing, die Verwaltung und Einrichtung von E-Mail-Konten sowie Optionen und die Arbeit mit Outlook 2003. Im Anhang dann noch die Geschichte von Exchange, SMTP und POP3 für Fortgeschrittene und Verschlüsselung für Mails.
